How To Give Back This Mandela Day

Here at the ENTERTAINER we appreciate the value in giving back. And if you are reading this article, you are most probably privileged enough to show a little gratitude for 67 minutes on the 18th of July. So, Mandela Day is the perfect occasion to do just that.

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela

Need some ideas for this year’s Mandela Day? We’ve rounded up some great causes that’ll defs make your heart beat a little faster:

For the foodie |

Mandela Day is about giving back selflessly, right? But, what if I told you that if you ordered muffins (R20 each), you’d be providing TWO people a safe shelter and a meal for a night at The Haven Night Shelter? I think YES! All you have to do is email: [email protected] to place your order.

For the feminist |

You don’t have to go to the extreme to consider yourself a feminist (bras are expensive, anyway). If you believe in women’s rights in any way, big or small, then I hate to break it to you, but you are a feminist. I mean, my best (male) friend regards himself as a feminist.

Let me not get sidetracked here ?‍♀️ If you’ve ever stopped to see how pricey sanitary products are, you’ll get why I’m adding this to this list. Subz @Project Dignity makes reusable, re-washable sanitary products that last for about 4 years. There are various ways that you can get involved – either add them to you MySchool card (super easy), make a once-off donation (even easier, right?), or get involved in the actual spreading the word and educating girls on how the product works (incredibly rewarding).

For the adventurous |

Guys and gals, doesn’t this sound EPIC? A mass bike ride for Mandela Day? Count us in. This event will take place in Joburg and is organized by Zelda Grange herself. Not too shabby, if you ask me!

For the creator |

We all need to stir up our creative juices sometimes. On the 18th of July, you can go help knit a square for the Ulwazi Community Centre. No skills required, even.

For the animal lover |

Lend a paw this Mandela Day and go give some love and affection to our furry, loving friends. If you want to give more than just your time, go visit DARG’s Facebook page for all the relevant details. This activity will definitely help you out too.

For the entertainment lover |

Buy a ticket for a show at the Cape Town Comedy Club for Mandela Day. Tickets are going for R167, and proceeds will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. You can expect the likes of Conrad Koch & Rob Van Vuuren to make sure you fall off your chair with laughter. This is a goodie, because you get to hear funny jokes AND use your ENTERTAINER app.

So, how does 67 minutes of laughter sound to you?

For the teacher |

For those of you who are teachers by nature, this one’s for you. Early childhood development is SO important guys. And, the youth is our future, so it’s OUR responsibility to help educate them. Learning in Reach is definitely a cause that’ll make a difference.

“It is time for the next generations to continue our struggle against social injustice and for the rights of humanity. It is in your hands.”

Nelson Mandela

At the very least, just look someone in the eyes, smile and say thank you like you really mean it. You’ll make their day.

C’mon, be a helping hand this Mandela Day.
