Ah, April. Month of public holidays and gentle(r) weather. Obviously, you need to take advantage of the general sense of merriment and do some seriously fun stuff. Whether you’re into biltong pairings or bearded winemakers – or you just really want to kick back and watch a movie – there’s something on in Cape Town for you this weekend.

21 April: The Hunger Games at the Galileo Open Air Cinema

The Galileo’s summer season is coming to an end, so if you haven’t been yet, now’s your chance. This Friday, the iconic outdoor cinema is screening The Hunger Games on the Fedisa rooftop. The location has killer views, and happens to be a few steps away from vibey Bree street. The movie starts at sunset, which gives you just enough time for a pre-drink at the Station on Bree.

22 April: Honest Chocolate Bonbon Workshop

If you’ve ever doubted that “healthy can be delicious”, well – you need to try Honest Chocolate. They serve up crazy good chocolate treats at their cafe, and they’ve recently started running monthly bonbon workshops. You can expect to work with the highest-quality raw cacao and you’ll get to take home your own box of handmade happiness. Pop in next door to Bean There for a coffee first, to warm up those creative juices.

22 April: Bot River Barrels and Beards Harvest Festival

Trust the Overberg to come up with their own weird and wonderful version of the traditional harvest festival. During the harvest season, Bot River winemakers stop shaving (so that they can truly focus on making epic wines?) and then showcase their brilliant beards at the event.

If the beards don’t do it for you, go for the views, the vibe, and – of course – the vino.

22 – 23 April: Pinotage & Biltong Festival

South Africans are a multi-cultural lot. But when it comes to biltong, we’re pretty much all identical in our beliefs: WE LOVE THE STUFF. What better way to enjoy the many nuances of our favourite local delicacy than with a glass of pinotage in the other hand? Really, I couldn’t have come up with a better festival if I’d tried. I’m planning on making a real outing of it by getting dinner at nearby Piza e Vino before heading home.
