Proudly South African Milkshakes For Summer

On the 24th of September, every South African across the country celebrated Heritage Day. It was a chance to share our diversity and our stories. A chance to relax with family and friends. A chance to remember what makes our cultural melting pot (potjie?) so darn awesome. And man, did it make us lus for some proudly South African treats.

So, in the spirit of all things local, and with the days getting longer and warmer – we headed to Fire and Ice for an icy, refreshing, locally-inspired dessert. And the milkshake kings did not disappoint!

The Ouma en Oupa Milkshake

This carrot cake and rooibos concoction is appropriately named Ouma en Oupa, and for those who blinked at 0:17, THERE IS A WHOLE SLICE OF CAKE IN IT. We think our videographer pretty much summed up this milkshake when he said after just one sip, “this is the best thing I have ever tasted.”

The Springbokkie Milkshake

For those who like to amp things up a notch, Head Chef Jason shared his Springbokkie milkshake recipe with us too. Yup, there’s peppermint liqueur in it, and it tastes pretty much exactly like a liquid Peppermint Crisp. If Peppermint Crisps were slightly alcoholic and therefore illegal to consume at work.

So there you have it: two unique dessert recipes that might just make you sing the national anthem after tasting them. And if you’d rather head to Fire and Ice for the real deal, well, we’re not going to stop you. (You can totally use your Entertainer to get a scrumptious 2-for-1 meal there too.)

Bring it on, summer.
